Looking for a Cook

Post by Marie »

I was wondering if this site could help me. I am doing genealogy research on my family and discovered that my grand uncle - Antonio Vincelette - was a cook in the 95th aero squadron during WWI (August 1917). I do not know anything about his unit nor where he served. I am located near the National Archives in Washington DC but have not been able to find complete rosters. I also requested information from St. Louis but to no avail. If someone could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks for your help!

Hi Marie, you should be able to request and obtain a copy of your grand uncle's US Army service record from NARA, try this web link:
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/milita ... cords.html

You also might contact the Wright Patterson Air Force Base located in Dayton, Ohio, as they are supposed to have some records of the military air forces. Try these web links for the WPAFB Museum:
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/index.htm

and information on research available at WPAFB:
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/mua.htm

The complete list of air forces unit histories is located at the Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell AFB located in Alabama:
http://www.au.af.mil/au/afhra/

Here's a web site for researching WW1 (and genealogy in general)
http://www.cyndislist.com/worldwar1.htm

Here's a couple of great genealogy sites:
http://www.familysearch.org/
http://www.genealogy.com/index_r.html

Here's a list of four books about the 95th Aero Squadron:
http://us95th.org/history_books.html
The first two books in the list are still in print and available, I highly recommend them both. The second two books are out of print and are highly recommended also:

(in print and available)
"First to the Front" by Charles Wooley
"Echoes of Eagles: A Son's Search for His Father and the Legacy of America's First Fighter Pilots" by Charles Woolley and Bill Crawford

(out of print)
"Heaven High, Hell Deep" by Norman Archibald
"Squadron 95" by Harold Buckley

Hope some of this information may help you.

Thank you so much US95Pickett. These are great leads. You are the second one to recommend Charlie Wooley's excellent book -"First to the Front". I was not aware of this publication and will look for it immediately.

I will also complete another SF-180 to see if St. Louis has any records. I requested these before and was informed of the fire that destroyed many records during this time period. Many thanks for your wonderful help!

Hi Marie, you might not be able to obtain a copy of the service record of your grand uncle, I did some further checking on the availability of individual service records from that time period and found there was a massive fire that had destroyed approx. 80% of the records of that time period that were stored at the facility in MO.
Perhaps you still may be able to obtain some information on your grand uncle from the records stored at WPAFB or Maxwell AFB.
Best of luck to you in your genealogical research endeavors.
